Fascia is a thin connective tissue
layer that wraps around every muscle, bone, and organ. Fascia keeps other anatomical
tissue in place and shape. Recently, structures resembling the meridians of
traditional Chinese medicine have been located in the fascia.
What is the purpose of this class?
In this class a simple, effective, pain free
Myofascial release technique is presented. Results of this technique can immediately be
observed in increased flexibility and range of motion, and reduced pain in
affected areas. Applying this technique prior to deep tissue massage or sports
massage yields better, faster and longer lasting results.
Basic Principle: why and how does this method work?
The outermost layer of fascia directly
beneath the skin is effectively comparable to a full body suit. Tension and
distortions in this body suit from everyday life, age, trauma, and scarring can
result in decreased flexibility and range of motion.
Generally we are not aware of how
much of our decreased flexibility and range of motion can be attributed to
tension in the outermost layer of fascia, or how much energy we spend working and
moving through its resistance until it is properly released.
Imagine a gymnast. A gymnast is
usually quite agile and flexible. Imagine this gymnast attempting a gymnastic routine
in a tight, form fitting coverall made out of stiff cotton. In this outfit, it
doesn’t matter how flexible this person is, their movements are restricted by
the garment they wear. Releasing this stiff outer layer – and in the case of
the gymnast replacing it with a flexible bodysuit – releases the confinement
and they can perform their gymnastic routine unconstrained.
With the myofascial technique
presented in this workshop we remove the tightness and restrictions in the
outermost layer of fascia closest to the skin – the tight, stiff coverall. This
allows for the underlying muscles to work more freely and the joints to move
within their natural range of motion.
In the workshop presented the massage technique used to release the fascia is tissue spreading with cocoa butter with focus on the fascia. The direction of the strokes is in correspondence with Langer’s lines and the approach is at a 45° angle to the surface of the body using mild to moderate pressure. The full body routine presented includes supine, side lying, and prone positions.
This is a versatile technique that can be used in a standalone one-hour session
or in combination with other modalities.
This advanced modality can be used as a sports massage routine that is
especially effective in combination with QS Muscle Stretching as pre-event
therapy (60 to 120 minutes sessions). Some athletes will require some pre-event
practice to adjust to improved range of motion and flexibility (Golfing, Base
Ball).
QS Myofascial Therapy is recommended as preliminary technique to soften dense
layers of connective tissue for deep tissue massage and deep tissue therapy.
Used at the beginning of a regular massage session QS Myofascial Therapy helps
loosen tight, dense connective tissue for more effective massage treatments
that are easier on the client as well as the therapist.
